CUCC’s Religious Education Ministry is sponsoring a three week study that will be co-led by Rev. Robert Parrish, Rev. Bonnie Bates, and Rev. Ryan Wagers.
This study will explore an important chapter of UCC history. The class will use the recently published book, The Afro Christian Convention: The Fifth Stream of the United Church of Christ, edited by Yvonne V. Delk. Order your book to begin reading now. Join us as we explore the rich history of the Afro Christian Convention, discover the roots of the United Church of Christ’s Fifth Stream, and celebrate the gifts of African American faith, leadership, and witness that continue to shape the life of our church today.
In recent years, the United Church of Christ has formally recognized the Fifth Stream of its heritage (the historic African American faith tradition that has been part of the church’s life since its earliest beginnings). This recognition celebrates the enduring witness, leadership, and contributions of African American Christians whose story stretches from the villages and shores of West Africa through the enslaved communities of the American South, including the “hush harbors” of eastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, and into the life of the United Church of Christ today.
