Raleigh physician Brian Klausner intertwines stories of his journey of understanding in treating our chronically homeless neighbors with the biology of homelessness and the economics of their medical care.  Full of practical suggestions for the policy and practice based on experience and data, Klausner’s book sparks the imagination and transforms the reader.  As CUCC discerns how we want to engage in ministries of affordable housing, this book will give us shared language and understanding.

CUCC Reads Book Discussion

Thursday, September 23, 7PM, on Zoom

Enriched by his experiences as the Medical Director of WakeMed’s Community Population Health and a WakeMed primary care physician  and by his early career at Boston’s Health Care for the Homeless as the Medical Director of the Boston Medical Center Site Clinic, Klausner charts a path toward a medical care system which could be both more efficient and more compassionate.  CUCC’s Justice Coffee learned of Dr. Klausner’s book from colleague and CUCC member Dr. Mike Soboeiro.  After reading the book, we were enthusiastic about getting it into the hands of as many friends as possible and decided to sponsor this CUCC Reads book discussion.

What are Justice Coffee readers saying about In the Gaps? Ask Ellen, Robert, Etta, Mark, and Jane.Dr. Klausner is a recipient of the 2025 Carolyn and Cy King Peace and Justice Award which encourages us to learn from and be inspired by people in our community who “embody spirits of service and grace and demonstrate commitments to addressing issues of justice and peace in our community and world.”

How to get a copy of the book

Autographed pre-ordered copies of the paperback book are available for sale for $20.00 during fellowship on July 20 and 27.  All proceeds from these sales are divided between CHETA:  ChildHood Empowerment Through Activity and Oak City Cares.

The book is also available for purchase online (paperback or Kindle) or at Quail Ridge Books.

We know the cost of a book is not in everyone’s budget; borrow one of the two copies in CUCC’s library or one of five copies from the Wake County Public Libraries, returning it so others may read it before our discussion evening.  If this doesn’t work for you, speak to Pastor Śānti.
