Several years ago, 20 members of our church made a racial justice pilgrimage to Alabama and Georgia. We were so moved by the experience that we created our Racial Justice Project as a part of our Do Justice Ministry. We committed to support several initiatives, one of which is the Wake County Community Remembrance Coalition (WCCRC) which is working with the Equal Justice Initiative to memorialize the documented 1918 lynching of George Taylor in Rolesville and to connect that awful event to the over incarceration of black people to this day.
The WCCRC sponsors a pilgrimage each December to Montgomery.
If you weren’t able to go on the CUCC pilgrimage, the Racial Justice Project encourages you to join CUCCer Jim Smith and others from the WCCRC on this year’s pilgrimage, Dec. 5-6. In addition to visiting EJI’s Freedom Monument Sculpture Park, Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice, we’ll visit the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church where Martin Luther King preached, the Freedom Rides museum and the Civil Rights Memorial. Read more about the pilgrimage here.
