Life & Faith will gather Monday, April 6, at 6:30PM at High Park Bar and Grill. If it is a lovely spring evening we will sit on the patio; if not, look for the inside table with our Life & Faith red comma centerpiece where Jane Smith, our convener for the evening, will greet you and get the conversation started..
- Arrive by 6:30PM if you want to order a drink or food; we each purchase our own. Please tip generously.
- Conversation runs 7:00 to 8:00 PM.
Because Life & Faith is an opportunity to talk through the places where what we believe and the practicalities of daily life are colliding for us, anyone is welcome to bring a question for the group to discuss. This is an open group and friends are welcome. What is said at Life & Faith stays among us.
As usual, Jane will bring a back up question in case one doesn’t emerge from the group.
If you have questions about Life & Faith, contact Jane Smith via Breeze or office.cucc@gmail.com.
April backup question
During Lent, many of our spiritual growth opportunities emerged from Jesus’ “sermon on the mount” (Matthew chapters 5-7). Our April gathering is the day after Easter – a good time to reflect on that Lenten focus together.
Jesus’ “sermon” is a collection of memorable sayings and narrative sketches grabbed from the headlines to help the emerging kindom community make choices day to day. We are surrounded by sayings and social media memes that people today use to guide their moral choices. Where Jesus gave his friends blessings to encourage them, we have the new t-shirt encouraging veterans in crisis: “To the person behind me, the world is a better place with you in it.” Where Jesus helped his followers imagine the radically contrarian decision to go the second mile and give away a cloak and a shirt, we have Michelle Obama’s “When they go low, we go high.” Where Jesus invited us to be light and salt, we have the Poor People Campaign’s: “Love Forward Together; Not one step back.”
What contemporary memorable sayings and social media memes help you decide – in the moment, at the decision point – how to follow the way of Jesus? If you are willing, tell us of a time when you were trying to decide “what would Jesus do?” and a contemporary phrase or image popped into your head.
