Question from Diligent CUCC Composter
The City of Raleigh recently sent out a notice that the clean lids of pizza boxes can be recycled, and the dirty bottoms put in the trash. I have been putting my whole pizza box in CUCC’s compost bins. What should I do?
Answer from Justice in a Changing Climate chair Gary Smith
Hi, Diligent. The City of Raleigh recycles but they don’t compost. So for those who don’t have access to a composting service, it’s great that the City can recycle clean pizza box tops. (Pizza box bottoms are too dirty to recycle, so the City needs us to throw them away.)
But…
At CUCC we pay for industrial composting service, Compost Now, to collect our pizza boxes – tops and bottoms, clean or dirty! So bring your entire pizza box to CUCC for one of the outside composting bins in our courtyard. Remember to remove the plastic “Barbie table” before you put the box in the bin.
Thank you very much, Diligent CUCC Composter, for asking the great question!
