Most of you know of our tradition of giving prayer sticks to new members, confirmands, and
others sharing their lives with us. These prayer sticks are now crafted by volunteers who
prayerfully consider the recipient and then create these little art works using different colors of
yarn, trims, and bamboo sticks. In addition to the stick itself, we try to adorn each with a
feather or two, symbolizing the prayers that are “contained” in the prayer stick. We hope that
the recipients remember the prayers and the love our congregation gives to them.
Recently we have been experiencing a shortage in suitable feathers. Some friends have
donated some they have found on their walks, and they are much appreciated. Right now we
are using the shorter feathers (4 – 5”) because we don’t have enough longer ones. (6-8”) The
ones shorter than 4” are really too small to use except occasionally to complement the larger
ones. We do need longer ones, especially those with distinctive colors or patterns. So my
question is: Do you collect feathers? Do you not know what you are going to do with them
after you show them to friends and family? Would you consider donating them to the prayer
stick group?
Also, would YOU like to become involved in the prayer stick group? Reach out to Rev. Santi or Autumn so they can add you to the email notification list.
P.S. We do not need yarn UNLESS it is gold, silver, or copper colored metallic. As a matter of
fact, if you need small amounts of yarn for a project, feel free to ask to see our stash. It doesn’t
take much yarn to make a prayer stick, and we probably have enough to last for several years.
