CUCC’s youth served a meal to the women at the Helen Wright Center, a shelter for homeless women. Sunday morning, youth prepared a meal of sausages, pinto beans, rice, collards, cornbread and Christmas cookies. Especially fun was the opportunity to hand-decorate sugar cookies with colorful icing. That evening, four youth and four adults took the meal to the shelter, prayed, sang “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” plated food, and greeted the women as they ate. Many women asked for seconds – especially on rice and collards. The home-baked and beautifully decorated cookies were a welcome treat!
The youth would like to thank:
- all those who donated ingredients and baked cookies
- Grady McCallie and Susan Atkinson who provided guidance on food preparation and clean-up at the church
- Heather Burkhardt and Laurel Powell for help serving and photographing
- and KayJay Jones and Shannon Wood for doing all the dishes at the shelter
While at the shelter, we discovered that they really need paper napkins – so youth will organize a collection for them in January. Watch for your chance to contribute.
